Matoi comes to live with her father at the beginning of the series long after the mysterious disappearance of her mother. She hopes to live out her days as a normal girl.
Her plans are interrupted however when a being from a higher dimension (also known as a god) becomes attached to her whilst she works at her uncle's shrine, allowing her to transform using a process known as "Divine Union".

Matoi's God allows her to access the power of "Myriad", which draws from all of the lower gods in the local area to make her stronger. This can manifest in the form of a sword and a physical halo.
